Hello Gents;

I have a 2011 SEL Taurus , and I found out that the third brake light "High Mount light" is not working

I checked the owner manual to change it and there was no method there as its not supposed to be replaced, any ideas ?

I went to check fuses and relays, and I found something am not sure of, as in the owner manual, there is a relay to control this light in the power distribution box @ slot 51, but when I checked it I found that there was no Relay in my car in that slot  !!! could this be the reason?

please if anybody can share with me a picture of the power distribution box relays and number it would be great

Thanks :)

AFAIK, the high mount brake light assembly on those are LEDs. I have also heard of people complain that these have fallen before and have not held up. Perhaps the connection is loose. Inspect that first.

There should not be a relay for it, but I could be wrong.

LED Non serviceable. Hopefully you are still in warranty but other than a connection there is not much other troubleshooting.

Not serviceable - oh that's an issue. In New York, I don't think you can pass inspection without it.

Should be under warranty unless you have high miles!!

Ought to check again, the owner's manual for my '02 has complete information how to remove the fixture. I obtained one at the dealership and replaced it. All it took was a credit card to release it by following instructions in the book.

That is 2002....This is a 2011..........big difference.......The 2002 was on the rear deck or trunk I believe... As for vehicle safety inspections I have access to the NY inspection criteria but I believe your correct about failing. Most states require full lighting...if it is installed it is subject to inspection. Definitely get it taken care of before inspection to avoid embarrassment at inspection time.

Thanks all for your kind support

Actually the car warranty is over as the mileage is above 100K mile,

Yesterday I removed the cover of the LED brake light to check it and found that the LED strip has some loose in the earth cable, I reconnected it correctly and now the LED light works.

The removal of this light was very tricky though,

I still cant understand why in the 2011 Taurus manual "page 289" its written
" 51 - Half ISO relay - High mount brake lamp w/ ACCM relay",

anyway, the light works now so no worries

again thank you all

cheers :)

Glad it got fixed. I checked my 2014 manual and couldn't find the relay you were referring to -- actually, I couldn't find an entry for the CHMSL period, unless it was bundled in with the other "stop lamps" in the fuses chapter.

How did you get behind the light? I'm curious.

2013-2014 Electronics are WAY different than 2010-2012 MY's. They changed a lot of stuff and added a lot of new modules. Went to a BCM from the SJB and added 2 more HS CAN buses with a gateway module.

A move that surprised me, honestly. What does the BCM give us over the SJB?

Nothing really. Just completely rewired everything.

They just renamed it. They really have the same function. Adding more modules and more CAN buses just made them want to change them all to body control modules instead of smart junction boxes I guess? They changed from a CJB/GEM pair to a SJB in 2004 when CAN bus became standard.

You just have more modules and features.... LOL more computers! Maybe a few less wires?

A lot of the changes, particularly the additional CAN buses, were to accommodate the MFT system. The side benefit of the additional CAN buses is that there are substantially less analog circuits in the car. Electrically, the '13+ cars share almost nothing in common with the '10-'12 cars. As different as they are, I've often questioned if we should refer to them as Gen 6.5.

Totally agree, alot have changed on 13+ cars, not only the look, Ford tried to make it very hard to modify '10-12' and make it just like +13

Also the relay in slot 51 I mentioned, its confirmed to be not used and not needed, as the slot is not coneected to anything beyond the Power box

To get behind the LED, the most tricky thing is the removel of the black plastic cover, its held with clips so need extra care, after that its easy, also the LED carrier it self is sticked using clips and 2 sided tape, you need to finish work on it in a short time in order for the tape not to dry and get into another problem :)

I was thinking the same thing. People don't realize how electrically different they really are. It's amazing. It's like an entire new car! The amount of added modules is amazing.

Interesting thread. I've lost 3 of the 12 LEDs for the high mount brake light on my 2013. Looking from the back, from right to left, 3 are lit, 3 are out, 6 are lit. Strange. Manual says this light is "designed to last the life of the vehicle". Uh oh. I have an appointment at the dealer in a couple weeks for 2 recalls (fuel pump and licence plate lights), they're supposed to have a new brake light for me by then.

Yikes, I wonder if water seeped in and caused corrosion.

That is the issue for the licence plate lights. Where salt is used on the roads, it's getting behind the glass and oxidizing. Mines fine so far, but part of the recall. The third brake light pops out of the housing easy. It's all one unit and I doubt the 3 LEDs are gone, likely something smaller in the electrical chain. I'll post if they tell me what they find wrong, but likely it'll be replaced as a unit and they'll just toss the old one.

You should be able to request to keep old parts especially if your paying. If it I warranty then sometimes they send back to vendor but you have to ask to keep old parts they wont volunteer.

It'll be warranty, so I doubt I can keep the old part, but I will ask, thanks for the tip.
